A rider stands on a special board with foot bindings. These bindings keep their feet tucked safely in place. A motorboat pulls the rider behind it using a long rope.

The rider uses the wake, which is the wave made by the boat, to jump. Many riders try to perform midair tricks for fun or competition. This sport is growing very fast in many parts of the world. Since 2010, it has grown by more than 10% every single year.

To ride well, you need to understand how the gear works. The board has a curve called a rocker. There are four common styles: continuous, three-stage, five-stage, and hybrid rockers. These different curves change how the board feels on the water. Some boards have fins on the bottom to help you turn. Beginners might use up to five fins to stay level. However, experts often remove them to make spins and tricks easier. The board itself usually has a core made of wood or foam. It is then covered in a strong coating of fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Wakeboarding has a very interesting history that began with water skiing. Around 1950 in the USA, people used mono water skis. These were single skis that did not use the boat's wake for jumps. Later, people used surfboards to ride the water. In New Zealand, people called these "skurfboards." In Australia, a company sold boards called "McSkis." In 1985, Tony Finn started a company called Skurfer. He wanted a board that was a mix of a surfboard and a water ski. By the early 1990s, the O'Brien company made the Hyper lite board. This was a special board designed to float easily.

Safety is a big part of the sport. Riders wear life vests to help them stay floating in the water. They also wear helmets that let water flow through so they do not get heavy. Even the rope length is a safety tool. A rope that is too long can cause a rider to land poorly. Beginners usually use ropes between 50 and 75 feet long. Advanced riders often use longer ropes from 75 to 85 feet. Modern ropes are made of strong materials like Spectra or Dyneema. These materials do not stretch too much when the rider jumps.

There are many ways to perform amazing tricks. Riders move their weight to fly into the air. Some tricks include the 180° spin or a ride switch. More difficult moves are called "inverts." This means the board goes above the rider's head. A Raley is a trick where the body stays parallel to the water. A tantrum is a backflip that many people learn first.

This sport is similar to kitesurfing because the moves look alike. Many people enjoy wakeboarding because it does not depend on the wind.
