A rider stands on a board. The board has foot bindings to hold their feet. A motorboat pulls the rider with a rope.

Riders use the wake to jump. The wake is the wave made by the boat. They can perform many tricks in the air. Some tricks are called inverts. These moves put the board above the rider's head. A tantrum is a backflip. It is often the first invert to learn.

Safety is very important. Riders wear life vests to stay afloat. They also wear helmets. The rope length matters too. A long rope helps with big tricks. A short rope needs less speed. The board has a curve called a rocker. This shape helps the ride feel smooth. Different boards use wood or foam inside. They have a coating of fiberglass or carbon fiber. This sport is growing fast. It has grown over 10% every year since 2010. It grew from water skiing, surfing, and snowboarding.
