A person, called a surfer, uses a board to ride the face of a wave. The moving water usually carries the surfer toward the shore. Most waves for surfing are found on ocean shores. However, you can also find waves in lakes or rivers. Some people even ride waves in special wave pools.

There are many different ways to ride the water. Some people use a bodyboard while lying on their belly. Others use a hydrofoil to ride fast with very little drag. You can even go body surfing without any board at all. This is when you use just your own body to catch a wave. Some surfers even use a handboard with a strap for their hand.

Surfing connects to many other fun water activities.

Some people use paddles to go sea kayaking or paddle boarding. Other sports like windsurfing and kite surfing use the wind for power. You can even try wakesurfing by riding the wake of a boat.

Whether using a board or just your body, it is a skill people cherish. It is a way to feel the energy of the ocean.
