It is very similar to rugby league, but players do not tackle each other. Instead, every player wears a special belt with two velcro tags attached.

When an attacking player has the ball, they try to dodge and pass to teammates. Defenders try to stop them by pulling a tag from the belt. This action is called a "tag" and it replaces the traditional tackle. This way of playing makes the game safe for many different people to enjoy together.

Rules can change depending on which version of the game you play. In the Australian version called OzTag, there are eight players on each team. The field is usually 70 by 50 metres in size. Attacking teams get five plays or tags to score a try. In mixed gender games, there is a limit of four male players on the field. To make things fair, a try scored by a female player is worth two points. A try scored by a male player is worth one point.

People have been playing versions of this game for a long time. A writer named Terry Godwin said tag rugby began in Gibraltar. There was not enough grass for big pitches, so they made a new version. Players tucked a cord into their waistband instead of using a belt. If an opponent pulled the cord and shouted "tag," it counted as a tackle. Later, a teacher named Nick Leonard created the modern rules in England in 1990. He used colored ribbons and velcro belts to make it perfect for school children.

Today, tag rugby is a huge sport played all over the world. In Australia, over 200,000 people play in organized OzTag leagues. The sport is also very popular in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. In Ireland, the Pig 'n' Porter Festival in Limerick is the largest tournament in the world. It can have up to 150 teams joining in the fun each year. Even in Hong Kong, new groups like HKTag are helping the sport grow through social sessions and beach games.

Because it is non-contact, tag rugby is a great way to bring communities together. It is used by rugby clubs to train players and develop new skills. Many companies even sponsor teams for office competitions because it is safe for all ages. In Ireland, there are even "vets" leagues for players who are over 35 years old. Whether playing in a big stadium or a local park, people love the skill and togetherness the game brings. It is a sport where everyone can find a way to play.
