In this game, players do not tackle each other to the ground. Instead, the defensive team tries to pull a flag from a belt. This action is called "deflagging," and it ends a play.

Because players do not tackle, there is very little contact. This makes the sport a great way for many people to play together. It is a popular game for both men and women all over the world.

Rules for the game can change depending on the league.

Most games are played in two halves with a clock. Many leagues use ten players per team, with five on offense and five on defense. Some versions use fewer players, like four, seven, or nine people on a side. There is no punting team in most flag football games. You can even play on different surfaces like sand at the beach.

Some leagues even allow "blocking" if they are playing a contact version.

The history of the sport goes back to the early 1940s.

It began during World War II as a way for American soldiers to stay fit. It was designed to prevent injuries during wartime. At first, people called it "Touch and Tail" football. Later, the name changed to flag football. The sport is believed to have started at Fort Meade in Maryland, USA. In the 1960s, the National Touch Football League was formed in St. Louis, Missouri.

Many groups help organize the sport today. The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) is a major governing body. Jim Zimolka helped start the International Federation of Flag Football in 2000. This group held the first World Cup of Flag Football in Cancún. In the men's games, the United States has won many times. On the women's side, teams from Mexico have been very strong. The NFL also helps by running the NFL Flag program for kids in the U.S.

Flag football is growing into a huge global sport. It will be a part of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This is the first time a gridiron football code will be in the Olympics. The sport is also played in the World Games. In the 2022 World Games in Alabama, the U.S. and Mexico won. Even college athletes are now playing it in varsity leagues. It is a sport that brings many different people together.
