The game began at Rugby School in England. Pupils there wrote the first rules in 1845. In 1863, a group called the Football Association formed. They made rules that banned running with the ball. Because they wanted to keep running with the ball, the Blackheath Club left them. This led to a permanent split in the sport. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union was formed.
