A thumb war is a small but exciting game for two people.

It is sometimes called thumb wrestling or a thumb fight. Players use only their thumbs to simulate a fight. The goal is to pin the opponent's thumb down. This often happens after a count of four. One newspaper even called it the miniature golf of martial sports. It is a simple way to have fun with a friend.

To play, two people face each other. They hold out one hand in a thumbs-up position. Then, they link their hands together. Each player curls their fingers around the other person's fingers. You must not use any fingers except your thumbs.

Some players use clever tactics to win. They might wait for an opponent to get tired. Others might try a quick strike or a sneak attack. You can even use a move called the Rabbit Hole to escape.

Most games start with a special rhyme. In English, players say, "One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war."

Many places have their own versions of this song. In New Zealand, they say, "Pea-knuckle, pea-knuckle, one, two, three. I declare a war on thee." In Australia, they might say, "Five, six, seven, eight, no time for toilet break." People in France and South America also have their own starting songs.

There are even huge world championships for this game.

These contests happen every year for men and women. Players compete inside a special wooden thumb wrestling ring. The matches follow a best-of-three-round format. Winners have come from the USA, Ireland, Poland, and the UK. Paul Browse is a famous four-time men's champion. Janet Coleman is the current ladies' champion. The 2023 World Championship took place in Norwich, UK.

This game has a long and interesting history. Some say Julian Koenig invented it in 1936 at a camp. Others believe Bernard Davidson invented it in the 1940s. Even famous people like Rory McGrath have competed in these matches. The game is much more than just moving your thumbs. It is a way to show skill and speed. It connects people through simple rhymes and friendly competition.
