Players face each other and lock hands. They curl their fingers around each other. The goal is to pin the other person's thumb. You must not use any other fingers.

Many people use a rhyme to start. In English, they say, "One, two, three, four, I declare a thumb war." People in New Zealand use a different rhyme. They say, "Pea-knuckle, pea-knuckle, one, two, three. I declare a war on thee." In Australia, players might add more to the rhyme. They may say, "Five, six, seven, eight, no time for toilet break."

There are even big world contests for this game. Players compete in a wooden thumb wrestling ring.

Some winners come from the UK, Ireland, or Poland. Paul Browse is a famous four-time men's champion. Janet Coleman is the current ladies' champion. The world contests were held in Norwich, UK, in 2023. These matches are a way to show great skill.
