The Magic 8 Ball is a famous toy used for seeking advice. It looks like a large black sphere. People use it to ask yes or no questions. It is a fun way to wonder about the future.

Many people enjoy it as an office toy or a children's toy. It has become a well-known part of our culture.

Using the ball is a simple and steady process. First, you hold the ball with the window facing down. This allows the inside parts to float correctly. You ask your question out loud to the ball. Then, you turn the ball so the window faces up. A white 20-sided die floats to the top. It presses against the window to show a message.

Inside the plastic shell, a special die floats in dark blue liquid. This die is called an icosahedron. It has 20 different faces with words on them. Dr. Lucien Cohen, a psychology professor, designed these answers. There are 10 affirmative answers that say yes. There are also 5 neutral answers and 5 negative answers. The letters are raised so they show through the blue liquid.

This toy has a long and interesting history. Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman invented it in 1946. Carter was inspired by a device his mother used. At first, they sold it as a cylinder called The Syco-Slate. In 1948, it was changed to look like a crystal ball.

In 1950, it finally took the shape of a black-and-white 8 ball. This new design was made for Brunswick Billiards.

Many different companies have owned the Magic 8 Ball over the years. Ideal Toy Company bought it in 1971. Tyco Toys bought the rights in 1987. Finally, Mattel became the maker after buying Tyco in 1997. In 2015, about one million balls were sold in a single year.

There is even a mobile app version of the toy now. It is still a popular way to play and wonder.
