Ruth Handler was a famous American inventor and business leader. She is best known for creating the Barbie doll in 1959. She also helped start the toy company Mattel with her husband, Elliot. Ruth served as the first president of Mattel from 1945 to 1975.

Her life was full of big ideas and new beginnings. She wanted to make things that people would enjoy using. Her work changed how children played with toys around the world.

Ruth noticed something special while watching her daughter, Barbara, play. Most dolls at that time looked like tiny babies or toddlers. Ruth wanted a doll that looked like an adult woman.

During a trip to Europe in 1956, she saw a doll called Bild Lilli. This German doll had an adult shape. Ruth bought three of them to bring home. She worked with a designer named Jack Ryan to change the doll. She named the new toy Barbie after her daughter.

Ruth grew up in Denver, Colorado. She was born on November 4, 1916, to Polish-Jewish immigrants. She was the youngest of ten children in her family.

Later, she moved to California and worked at Paramount Studio. She married Elliot Handler in 1938 in Denver. The couple started a business making furniture from plastics. They eventually renamed their company Mattel by joining names. This name came from Matson and Elliot.

Barbie became a huge success very quickly. The doll first appeared at a toy fair in New York City on March 9, 1959. Each doll cost only $3 at first. In just one year, the company sold 300,000 dolls.

Over time, Barbie grew to have many different jobs and outfits. The Handlers even added a boyfriend named Ken. Barbie can now have more than 125 different careers. This variety makes the toy very popular with many people.

Ruth also worked hard to help women with their health. In 1970, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This led her to start a new company called Ruthton Corp.

She created a product called Nearly Me to help women feel confident after surgery. Even after she left Mattel in 1975, her ideas stayed important. Ruth died in 2002 at the age of 85. Her life story was even told in a famous movie in 2023.
