Ruth Handler was a famous inventor. She helped start a toy company called Mattel. She was the company's first president.

Ruth saw a gap in the toy market. Most dolls looked like babies. She wanted a doll that looked like an adult. While in Europe, she saw a doll called Bild Lilli. This doll had an adult shape. Ruth brought the idea back to the United States. She worked with a designer to make a new doll. She named it Barbie after her daughter, Barbara.

Barbie was a big hit. In her first year, 300,000 dolls were sold. Barbie has many jobs and many outfits. The Handlers even added a boyfriend named Ken.

Later, Ruth faced health problems. She had breast cancer in 1970. This made it hard for her to lead the company. She started a new company called Ruthton Corp. She made a product called Nearly Me. These were realistic parts for women who had surgery. She wanted to help women feel better about themselves. Ruth died in 2002 at the age of 85.
