She was one of six women who programmed the ENIAC. This was one of the first big computers. The group was known as the "Sensational Six." They had no books to teach them. Instead, they studied diagrams of the machine. They also talked to the engineers who built it. To program the ENIAC, they had to move switches and wires. This was a new way to work. They helped invent many ways to use computers today.

Jean also helped make the ENIAC much better. She led a team to turn it into a stored program computer. This means the machine could hold its own instructions. This helped it work faster and more accurately. Later, she worked on other computers like the BINAC and UNIVAC. The BINAC was the first to use magnetic tape to store data. Jean's hard work helped start the computer industry. A theme for the Drupal software is named after her to honor her work.
