Eckert studied at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked with a man named John Mauchly. Together, they designed the ENIAC. This was the first general-purpose electronic digital computer. It used vacuum tubes to work. The ENIAC was very fast. It could help calculate math for artillery.

Later, Eckert and Mauchly started their own company. They made the UNIVAC. This was the first commercial computer in the U.S. It was sold to businesses. Eckert also made a new way to store data. He used mercury delay-lines for memory. His other machine, the BINAC, used magnetic tape to store data.

Eckert won many awards for his work. He received the National Medal of Science in 1968. He also won the Howard N. Potts Medal. In 2002, he was put into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. This happened after he died from leukemia. Eckert's work changed how we use technology today.
