Barbara Liskov is a famous computer scientist. She helps us understand how to write code. Code is the set of rules that tells a computer what to do.

She found new ways to make software more reliable. One big idea is called data abstraction. This is a way to hide complex parts of a program. It lets a person focus on the important parts. She also created the Liskov substitution principle. This is a rule for how different parts of a program work together. Her work helped shape many languages used today. These include Java, C++, and C#.

Barbara was a pioneer for women in science. She was one of the first women to earn a doctorate in computer science in the U.S. At Stanford, she even wrote a program to play chess!

She has won many big awards. In 2008, she won the Turing Award. This is the highest prize in computer science. She also won the Benjamin Franklin Medal in 2023. Today, she is a professor at MIT. She still leads a group that studies how computers talk to each other.
