Betty was one of six original programmers for the ENIAC. The ENIAC was the first large electronic digital computer. It was shown to the public in 1946. At first, the women could only see wiring diagrams. They could not see the whole machine because it was secret. Betty had many great ideas at night. Her friends joked that she solved problems in her sleep!

Betty helped make computers easier to use. She worked on the UNIVAC computer. She put the number keys next to the keyboard. She also picked a gray-beige color for it. This color became a common look for computers.

She was a great inventor. She made a way to find errors in code. We call this debugging. She also used playing cards to help her work. She helped make rules for computer languages like FORTRAN. Many people honor her today. A school for software engineers is named after her.
