Computers sometimes make mistakes. Engineers call these mistakes bugs.

The word "bug" is very old. In 1878, Thomas Edison used it to mean small faults. A famous story says a real moth got stuck in a computer in the 1940s. This was the first real bug found!

Finding these mistakes is called debugging. It is like being a detective. First, a person must make the bug happen again. This helps them see the problem. They might use a simpler way to find it. This is called a divide-and-conquer approach. It means they take parts away to see what stays.

Programmers use special tools called debuggers. A debugger lets them watch a program run. They can pause the code or go one step at a time. They can also use tracing. This means they watch the data move through the code. Some tools look for errors in the code itself. These are called static code analysis tools. They help find problems before the program even runs.
