They fit one inside another. The dolls get smaller as you open them. Each doll splits at the middle. This reveals a new doll inside.

The first set was made in 1890. A carver named Vasily Zvyozdochkin made them. A painter named Sergey Malyutin designed them. The first set had eight dolls. The biggest doll was a mother. She held a red rooster. Inside were her children. The smallest doll was a tiny baby.

Artists make these dolls from linden wood. They use a tool called a lathe. This tool helps shape the wood. Painters use many bright colors. Most dolls show a woman in a sarafan. A sarafan is a traditional Russian dress. Some dolls show flowers or fairy tales. Other dolls show famous people or animals. In Russia, these dolls represent family. They can also show the unity of the soul and mind. Today, you can even find a matryoshka emoji!
