This method is called resist dyeing. Artists draw or stamp hot wax on fabric. The wax stops the dye from soaking in. This creates a pattern when the wax is removed.

There are many ways to apply the wax. One way is called tulis, or written batik. Artists use a small tool called a canting. It is a copper pen with a wooden handle. This tool lets them draw fine lines and dots. Another way is called cap, or stamped batik. Artists use copper stamps to make patterns faster.

Batik is an ancient art. People have used it in Egypt and China. It is very special in Indonesia, especially on the island of Java. Some patterns have deep meanings. People might wear them for special events. Today, many artists still make batik. They use both natural dyes from plants and new synthetic dyes. Some artists even use stamps to make many cloths at once. This helps more people enjoy the art.
