A kimono is a traditional dress from Japan.

It has a rectangular body and square sleeves. The cloth wraps across the front. People usually wrap the left side over the right. This rule changes only for people who have died.

Most kimonos are made from a long bolt of cloth. This cloth is called a tanmono. People wear a wide sash called an obi to hold it. You might also see them worn with socks and zōri sandals.

Kimono styles change for many reasons. They depend on the season or the age of the person. Some are for formal events like weddings or graduations. Others are for fun, like summer festivals. At these festivals, people often wear a yukata. This is a very informal type of kimono.

In the past, the kimono grew from a simple undergarment. We call this older style the kosode. Over many years, the kosode became more decorated. It changed from a simple layer into the beautiful dress we see today. Even now, many people in Japan wear them for fashion.
