The top level has two main dolls. They represent an Emperor and an Empress. They sit in front of a gold screen. Other levels have many more dolls. Some dolls are court ladies. Some are musicians with instruments. There are even bodyguards with bows and arrows. Some sets have many tiers. The number of levels depends on a family's budget. Some sets can cost $1,500 to $2,500. Families often pass these dolls down to daughters. They are special family treasures.

Girls often have parties with friends. They eat special foods like rice cakes and sweet treats. They might also drink a non-alcoholic drink called amazake. People use colorful cords called hina-nagashi to decorate. These cords often have tiny paper dolls on them. It is a bright and joyful time for families.
