It tells a beautiful story about two lovers. Their names are Orihime and Hikoboshi. They are also stars in the sky. A wide river of stars keeps them apart. This river is called the Amanogawa. The lovers can only meet once a year. They meet on the seventh day of the seventh month.

Legend says magpies make a bridge with their wings. This helps Orihime cross the river to see her husband. If it rains, the river rises too high. The lovers must wait for another year.

Today, people celebrate with many fun customs. Many people write wishes on small paper strips. These strips are called tanzaku. People hang the tanzaku on bamboo plants.
