Tanabata is a bright and meaningful star festival in Japan.

It celebrates the meeting of two heavenly deities named Orihime and Hikoboshi. These characters represent the stars Vega and Altair in the night sky. A huge river of stars called the Amanogawa separates the two lovers. According to the legend, they are only allowed to meet once a year. This special meeting happens on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

People look to the stars during this time to feel connected to this ancient story.

Many people celebrate Tanabata by making special wishes. They write these wishes on small, colorful strips of paper called tanzaku. These paper strips are then hung on bamboo branches for everyone to see.

In the past, the customs were a bit different for everyone. Girls often wrote wishes to become better at sewing or craftsmanship. Boys would write wishes to improve their handwriting skills. Some people even used dew from taro leaves to make ink for their writing. After the festival ends, many people float their decorations on a river or burn them.

The history of Tanabata reaches back many centuries. The festival was first introduced to Japan by Empress Kōken in the year 755. It actually started from the Chinese Qixi Festival. Later, it was adopted at the Kyoto Imperial Palace during the Heian period. As time passed, it became very popular with regular people during the early Edo period. During this time, it mixed with other traditions like Obon. This mixing helped create the modern Tanabata festival we know today.

There are many specific details and names used in this tradition. The name Tanabata comes from the Chinese characters 七夕. Originally, these characters were read as "Shichiseki" in Japan. The festival date can change depending on the region. Some celebrations begin on July 7 on the Gregorian calendar. Other parts of the country might celebrate in August.

There is even a traditional song about the rustling bamboo leaves. The song describes the stars twinkling like gold and silver grains of sand. This helps people feel the magic of the night sky.

Tanabata is a beautiful way to connect stories with the real world. The legend of the lovers is similar to other famous folk stories. For example, some stories involve a celestial maiden or a person from the sky. These tales often involve people trying to reach a heavenly realm.

The story of Orihime and Hikoboshi teaches us about longing and hard work. If it rains on the festival day, it is called "the tears of Orihime and Hikoboshi." This is because the rain makes the river too high for the magpies to build a bridge. It reminds everyone to wait patiently for the next year.
