It is also called the Hungry Ghost Festival or the Zhongyuan Festival in Taoism. People celebrate it during the seventh month of the traditional Chinese calendar. This is often when the moon is full. During this month, the gates between worlds are believed to open. Spirits and ancestors are thought to come out to visit the living.

This time allows people to show respect to those who have passed away.

Families use many ways to care for these visiting spirits. They often prepare elaborate meals, which are sometimes vegetarian. They might even leave empty seats at the table for the deceased. This treats the spirits as if they are still part of the family. People also burn incense to bring prosperity to their homes. They burn joss paper, which is a special kind of paper. This paper can look like clothes, gold, or other fine goods.

Burning these items is a way to send helpful things to the afterlife.

There are many stories about how this festival began. In Buddhism, a story tells of a man named Maudgalyayana. He used his powers to find his mother in the spirit realm. He found she had become a hungry ghost. She was very hungry, but the food turned to burning coal when she tried to eat.

To help her, the Buddha taught that people could offer food to monks. This helps transfer good merits to deceased parents. In Taoism, the name Zhongyuan comes from a theory about three great officials. This festival became very popular during the Tang dynasty.

Different places have their own special ways to celebrate. In Singapore and Malaysia, people enjoy loud shows called Getai. These are song stages with singers, dancers, and even puppet shows.

In these shows, the very front row of seats is always left empty. This is because the ghosts are the special guests. It is even said that sitting in those red seats can bring bad luck. In Indonesia, people in Java may participate in a scramble for offerings. This is known as Sembahyang Rebutan.

Many traditions use light and water to help the spirits. People often buy miniature paper boats and lotus-shaped lanterns.

They set these afloat on rivers to give directions to lost souls. These lights act as guides to help spirits find their way. About fourteen days after the festival, people float these lanterns again. This helps make sure the ghosts find their way back to the underworld. These beautiful lights help the living and the spirits stay connected.
