Double Ninth Festival

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Double Ninth Festival is a special time in many East Asian cultures. It happens on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese calendar. In Chinese tradition, the number nine is a "yang" number. This means it holds a lot of positive energy. Because there are two nines, it is called the Double Yang Festival. This makes the date feel very lucky and auspicious. People celebrate to wish for health and long lives.

Many people enjoy being outside during this festival. A common tradition is to climb a mountain. While hiking, people look at bright chrysanthemum flowers. They might drink chrysanthemum tea or even homemade chrysanthemum wine. Some people also fly kites or make flower cakes. In Korea, people celebrate by having picnics on hills. They often eat tasty pancakes made with chrysanthemum leaves. In Japan, people might eat chestnut rice or chestnuts with sticky rice.

There are many old stories about how this holiday began. One story comes from the Eastern Han dynasty. A man named Huan followed his teacher's advice to climb a mountain. He drank chrysanthemum wine and ate special food that day. When he returned home, his animals were all safe. If he had stayed home, he might have been in danger. Another story involves a maid named Jia in an imperial palace. She told people to wear dogwood and drink chrysanthemum wine. These customs eventually spread to many people.

This holiday is also a time to honor family and history. Many people visit the graves of their ancestors to show respect. In Hong Kong and Macau, families clean the graves and repaint them. They might lay out food like fruit or roast suckling pig. In Taiwan, the holiday is also called Senior Citizens' Day. This was started in 1966 to care for older people. Local governments sometimes give small cash payments to seniors for this day. It is a way to show they are valued.

People use certain plants to help them feel healthy. They often wear a plant called zhuyu, which is also known as dogwood. This plant is believed to have cleansing qualities. People also use chrysanthemums to help air out their houses. In Taiwan, stores sell rice cakes called "gao" to celebrate. The name sounds like the word for height. This links to the idea of growing taller or living longer. Even mountain climbing races are held with winners wearing zhuyu wreaths.
