The Qingming Festival is a meaningful time for many Chinese people. It is a celebration of spring that honors ancestors. People call it Tomb-Sweeping Day or the Clear Brightness Festival. Families from mainland China to Vietnam celebrate this day. It falls about 15 days after the Spring Equinox. This usually happens on April 4, 5, or 6.

This festival shows the value of filial piety. This means showing deep respect to elders and family. People believe ancestors gave us our bodies and souls. By remembering them, families pass down good values to children.

During the festival, families follow special steps to honor the dead. They visit graves or city columbaria to clean the sites.

Some people believe you must only sweep during this time. They do not want to disturb the spirits on other days. Families kneel to pray before the tombstones. They may perform a ritual called kowtowing. This means bowing deeply to show respect. They often burn joss sticks or silver-leafed joss paper. They also offer traditional food dishes to the ancestors. In some places, people burn paper cars or phones for the afterlife.

This tradition has a very long history. It goes back more than 2,500 years to ancient times. It started from the Cold Food Festival. That festival honored a man named Jie Zitui from the state of Jin. In 636 BC, a ruler named Duke Mu of Qin tried to find Jie in a forest. The duke set the forest on fire to force him out. Sadly, Jie and his mother were killed in the fire. To honor him, people stopped lighting fires for a month. Later, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang dynasty made the holiday more formal. He wanted to stop people from holding too many expensive ceremonies.

There are many interesting ways to celebrate today. In mainland China, people eat green dumplings called qingtuan. These are made with rice and mugwort or barley grass.

In Taiwan, people might eat a treat called caozaiguo. Many people enjoy being outdoors during the spring weather. They fly kites shaped like animals or opera characters. Some families go hiking or play tug-of-war. In the past, the Tang dynasty had huge tug-of-war games. These games used ropes and had over 500 people on each side! People also plant willow trees to ward off misfortune.

Qingming connects to many parts of daily life. It is even important for tea lovers. Green tea picked before this day is called "pre-Qingming tea." This tea is very special and costs more money.
