Many Chinese families use this day to remember their ancestors. They visit graves to clean them and show respect. This is part of a value called filial piety. That means showing love and care for your elders.

Families bring food to the graves to honor the dead. They also burn joss sticks, which are thin sticks of incense. Some people burn joss paper, too. This is paper made to look like money or goods. People believe these items help ancestors in the afterlife.

In some places, people eat green dumplings called qingtuan. These are made from rice and mugwort, a type of herb. Families also enjoy being outside together. They might fly kites shaped like animals. Some people plant willow trees or wear willow twigs. This is done to help keep bad luck away.
