The Cold Food Festival is a special time in East Asia.

People use this time to honor their ancestors. The festival gets its name from an old rule. People did not light any fires to cook food.

This was done to show respect to a man named Jie Zhitui.

Jie Zhitui lived a long time ago in China. He was a very loyal man. He helped a prince named Chong'er when times were hard. Later, Jie went to live alone in the woods. A leader tried to smoke him out with a forest fire. Sadly, Jie died in the fire. To remember his loyalty, people stopped using fire for a few days. They ate cold foods instead. One food was a rice dish called lǐlào. It had apricot pits and sweet malt sugar in it.

Today, the festival has changed over many years. It moved from winter to the spring. It is now linked to the Tomb-Sweeping Festival. In South Korea, the holiday is called Hansik. Families visit tombs to tidy them up. They also welcome the warm spring weather.
