The Cold Food Festival is a meaningful tradition in East Asia.

People use this time to honor and remember their ancestors. The festival gets its name from a very strict rule. For a long time, people avoided lighting any kind of fire. This included not using fire to cook their meals. This practice was a way to show respect to a loyal man. Today, many of these traditions have joined the Tomb-Sweeping Festival.

There is a famous story about a man named Jie Zhitui. He lived in the Jin state during the 7th century BC. Jie was a very loyal friend to a prince named Chong'er. When the prince was in exile, Jie helped him survive. He even used meat from his own thigh to make soup. Later, Chong'er became the Duke of Jin. Jie did not want power or riches from the new Duke. He chose to live quietly in the forest instead. This choice showed his deep principles and his lack of ambition.

Sadly, the story of Jie Zhitui has a very sad end. The Duke tried to force Jie out of the forest. He ordered a forest fire to be set on three sides of the mountain. Jie and his mother were caught in the fire. They died because they would not leave their home. The Duke felt great remorse for what happened. He renamed the mountain Mt. Jie to honor the man. He also started the Cold Food Festival to remember Jie's loyalty.

History shows that this festival changed a lot over many years.

At first, it happened during the middle of winter. People in Taiyuan would not use fire for five days. This was sometimes very hard for them to do. Some people even died from the hardship of not using fire. Because of this, leaders like Cao Cao tried to ban the festival. In AD 206, he even tried to punish families who used fire. However, the tradition was very strong and continued anyway.

Eventually, the festival moved from winter to the spring season. It became linked to the Qingming solar term. People began to eat special cold foods during this time. One example is lǐlào, which is a type of congee. It is flavored with apricot pits and sweet malt sugar. In South Korea, the holiday is called Hansik. It often falls on April 5 or April 4. Families visit tombs to tidy them up and welcome the warm weather.
