The Yulanpen Sutra is a very important book in the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism. It focuses on a big idea called filial piety. This is a way of showing deep respect and care for your parents. The book is also known as the Ullambana Sutra.

Many people find this text meaningful because it teaches how to honor family. It helps followers understand their duties to those they love.

The book tells a story about a man named Maudgalyayana. He was a student of the Buddha. One day, he gained special powers called abhijñā. He used these new powers to search for his parents.

He discovered his mother was in the preta realm. Some people call these beings hungry ghosts. His mother was in a very difficult state. He tried to give her a bowl of rice. However, the rice turned into burning coal. She could not eat it because of her condition.

Maudgalyayana went to the Buddha to ask for help. The Buddha explained a way to assist parents. This includes parents from seven past lives.

One way is to offer food to the sangha. The sangha is a community of monks. This should happen during a time called Pravarana. This is at the end of the monsoon season. It usually happens on the 15th day of the seventh month. This special act creates merit. This merit can help release a person from suffering.

There are different versions of this story in history. One version was translated by Dharmarakṣa between the years 265 and 311 CE. This version is called 'The Buddha Speaks the Yulanpen Sutra.'

Another version is found in the Taisho Tripitaka. It is called 'The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of Offering Bowls to Repay Kindness.' This second version was translated during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. We do not know the name of that translator. Some scholars say it is a different way of telling the same story.

This sutra has a huge impact on many cultures. It helped create the Ghost Festival in China.

This festival then influenced other traditions in East Asia. For example, it helped shape the Bon Festival in Japan. These festivals allow people to remember their ancestors. They use the stories to show love and kindness. It connects old stories to how people celebrate today.
