He was born as Upatiṣya in the ancient Indian kingdom of Magadha. His family was quite wealthy. He grew up with a close friend named Kolita. As young men, they both became spiritual wanderers. They studied with many different teachers to find the right path. Eventually, they met the Buddha and became monks.

After joining, Śāriputra reached enlightenment as an arhat just two weeks later.

As a chief disciple, Śāriputra had many important jobs. He helped lead the Sangha, which is the community of monks. He looked after the monks and helped them with their meditation. He was also great at explaining difficult ideas.

Because he was so good at teaching, he earned a special title. It was "General of the Dharma." This meant he was a leader in spreading the Buddha's message. He was even allowed to ordain other new monks.

Many stories tell us about his history and his role.

Some texts say he was born in a village near Rājagaha. His mother was named Śārī, which is why he is called Śāriputra. This name means "son of Śāri." In Buddhist art, you will often see him sitting on the right side of the Buddha. This is because he was the first chief disciple. He was famous for his wisdom, while his friend was known for psychic powers.

Śāriputra's legacy continues through many different traditions today.

He died in his hometown shortly before the Buddha passed away. After he died, his relics were kept at the Jetavana Monastery. Later, kings moved these relics to different places across India. Even today, he is honored in traditions like Theravada Buddhism. Some people view him with a level of respect close to a second Buddha. His life shows how wisdom and teaching can help a community grow.
