Vasubandhu was a very important Buddhist monk and scholar from India.

He lived a long time ago, during the 4th or 5th century CE. His name means "the Kinsman of Abundance." Some people say he was born in Gandhara, while others believe he was from Central India. He was a famous thinker who studied many different ways of looking at the world. He is even called one of the Seventeen Nalanda Masters because of his link to Nalanda university. In different Buddhist traditions, he holds very high ranks. For example, he is the 21st Patriarch in Chan Buddhism.

Vasubandhu spent much of his life studying and writing about how we experience things. He first studied with a group called the Sarvastivada. This group believed that things exist in the past, present, and future. Later, he studied with a teacher named Manoratha from the Sautrantika school. This group had a different idea called "extreme momentariness." This means they believed only the present moment truly exists. Vasubandhu used these different ideas to write his famous book, the *Abhidharmakośakārikā*. This book is still a main source for many students today.

He later changed his beliefs to follow the Mahayana tradition. This change happened after he was influenced by his brother, Asanga. Together, the two brothers helped found the Yogacara school of thought. This school teaches a concept called "appearance only." This idea suggests that what we see is closely tied to our own minds. Vasubandhu wrote many books about this, like the *Thirty Verses on Consciousness Only*. These works helped shape how people in East Asia understand the mind.

Vasubandhu was also a very skilled debater. He once participated in a debate in front of a king named Vikramaditya at Ayodhya. After Vasubandhu won the debate against Samkhya philosophers, the king gave him 300,000 pieces of gold. Vasubandhu did not keep all this wealth for himself. Instead, he used the gold to build hospitals and Buddhist monasteries. He was a very productive writer who wrote about logic, poetry, and many religious topics. He even wrote a book called *Karmasiddhiprakarana* about how actions have results.

One of his biggest ideas was about the "self." Many people believe in a permanent soul or a solid self. Vasubandhu argued that there is no single, unchanging self. He believed we are made of five changing parts called aggregates. He said our thoughts and senses are always moving and changing like a stream. Because these parts never stay the same, there is no solid core. He lived to be 100 years old and died while visiting Ayodhya. His ideas still help people think about the mind today.
