His name was actually a special title given to him by his teacher. It meant he was competent and had authority. Other people said it meant he was always vigilant or present everywhere. One scholar noted that it could also mean "new." This was a way to describe his fresh and creative ideas. He was known to have many special qualities. These included deep faith, poetic creativity, and a natural knowledge of many subjects. He was able to organize many different ideas into one clear system.

Abhinavagupta came from a family of scholars and mystics. His ancestors had moved from a place called Kannauj to Kashmir. His father, Narasiṃhgupt, was his very first teacher. He taught Abhinavagupta about grammar, logic, and literature. His mother, Vimalā, passed away when he was only two years old. This loss made him focus even more on his spiritual studies. He grew up in a home filled with people who loved learning. This included his brother, Manoratha, and his cousin, Karṇa.

He had a great thirst for learning and studied with many teachers. He worked with at least fifteen different gurus. He studied many different schools of thought, including Buddhist and Shaivist ideas. His most admired teacher was a man named Śambhunātha. Abhinavagupta compared him to the sun because he helped remove ignorance. His master even asked him to write his most famous book. This book was meant to bring many different ideas together into one big view.

Abhinavagupta wrote over 35 works during his long life. His most famous book is called the Tantrāloka. This huge book explains many parts of his philosophy. He also wrote the Abhinavabhāratī, which is a commentary on art and drama. He lived in his home, which worked like a school for his students. He did not travel as a wandering monk. Instead, he stayed in one place to write and teach. Legend says he eventually went to a cave with 1,200 followers. They were never seen again after they went into the cave together.
