Bhartrhari was a famous Indian thinker and poet. He lived a long time ago. Most scholars believe he lived during the 5th century. He was a master of grammar and philosophy.

He studied how language works and how we think. His ideas were very special to many people. He wanted to find the deepest meaning in life.

His ideas focused on the power of words. He used a term called Shabda-Brahman. This means the ultimate reality is shown through words. He believed that language and thinking are linked together. By learning grammar, a person could find spiritual freedom.

He also spoke about a concept called sphoṭa. This is the idea that a word carries meaning to a listener. He thought this happened in letters, words, and even full sentences.

Bhartrhari lived in a place called Ujjain in India. He may have been born there in the 5th century. Some scholars think he lived between the years 485 and 540 CE.

He was once linked to the court of Valabhi. Later, he chose to follow the path of sages. He tried to live a monastic life to find meaning. However, he could not fully leave worldly things behind. He lived as a yogi in Ujjain until he died.

He wrote many important books that people still study. His most famous work is the Vakyapadiya. This book has three main parts. The first part is about the spirit of language. The second part looks at how sentences are built. The third part focuses on the meaning of words.

He also wrote a collection of 300 verses called the Satakatraya. This collection includes poems about ethics, love, and letting go of things.

His work has traveled far beyond India. Many different traditions have studied his deep thoughts. This includes groups like the Vedanta and Mimamsa. Even scholars from other places have translated his books.

Today, people all over the world can read his poems. His ideas about language still help us understand how we communicate. He remains a very important figure in history.
