Bhartrhari was a famous thinker from India. He lived about 1,500 years ago. Most scholars believe he lived in the 5th century. He was a poet and a philosopher. He also studied grammar, which is the rules of language.

Bhartrhari lived in a place called Ujjain. He once lived near a royal court. Later, he chose to live as a yogi. A yogi is a person who seeks a higher meaning. He lived this way until he died. He believed that words could show the ultimate truth. He called this idea Shabda-Brahman. He thought that knowing grammar could help a person find spiritual freedom.

He wrote many important books. One was the Vakyapadiya. This book is a deep study of words and sentences. He also wrote a collection of 300 poems called the Satakatraya. These poems come in three groups. One group is about how to live rightly. Another group is about love. The last group is about letting go of worldly things. People all over the world still read his work today.
