Prabhākara

philosophy religion Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Prabhakara was a thinker in India long ago. He lived around the 6th century. He was a philosopher and a grammarian. A grammarian is someone who studies how words work. He belonged to a group called the Mimamsa tradition.

Prabhakara had unique ideas about language. He believed words do not show meaning all by themselves. Instead, words get meaning from the sentences they join. We understand a word by looking at the words around it. This is different from the Bhatta school. That school thought words have their own meanings first.

People have different ideas about his faith. Some say his school did not believe in a god. But his own books say something else. They say he did not deny God. He just did not use certain ways to prove God exists.

Prabhakara was a very original thinker. He created a special theory of knowledge. He also had a way to explain how mistakes happen. Some scholars think his ideas are very close to the first Mimamsa teachings. His logic was so strong that math can even show it is error-free.
