Long ago in ancient India, a group of thinkers had a unique way of seeing the world. They were called Charvaka. Some people also called them Lokayata. This name means things that aim at the world. They focused on the life we live right now.

Charvaka thinkers believed in a way of knowing called perception. This means they only trusted what they could see, hear, or feel. They used their five senses to learn about things. They also believed in an inner sense, which is the mind.

They were very careful about making guesses. Making a guess is called inference. For example, you might see smoke and guess there is a fire. Charvaka thinkers said we must have doubt. Smoke can have other causes. They thought a guess might be right or wrong. Because of this, they were known as skeptics. This means they questioned what they knew.

Charvaka did not believe in a soul or life after death. They did not believe in karma or rebirth. Some say a man named Brihaspati started this school. Their ideas were part of a big time of new thinking in India.
