The śramaṇa tradition includes many different groups. Buddhism and Jainism are two famous examples. Other groups included the Ājīvika and Cārvāka. These followers often lived very simply. Some traveled from place to place. Some followed strict rules about food. Some even chose to live without clothes.

These groups had many different ideas. Some believed in a soul. Others did not. They also thought about big ideas. One idea is saṃsāra. This is the cycle of death and rebirth. They also sought moksha. This is being free from that cycle.
