The word comes from a Sanskrit root. That root means to hold or to support. Because of this, dharma can mean the law that holds the universe together.

Different religions use the word in different ways. In Hinduism, dharma is a way of living rightly. It includes duties, rights, and good behavior. A farmer has a different dharma than a soldier. This means dharma changes based on a person's role. Some people call the opposite of dharma "adharma." This means things that are wrong or against nature.

In Buddhism, dharma refers to the teachings of the Buddha. It also means the true nature of reality. In Jainism, it refers to teachings about being pure. In Sikhism, dharma is the path of being good and doing your duty.
