Many Buddhists follow a key idea. It is called dependent origination.

This idea says that all things arise because of other things. It is a way to see how the world works. One way to say this is: "if this exists, that exists." If one thing stops, then another thing stops too. It is not just one cause for a change. Instead, many factors work together to make things happen.

Some people use a list of twelve links to show this. These links are called nidanas.

One way to look at these links is through rebirth. They can show how a being is born again. This can lead to suffering or pain. Another way to look at them is through the mind. They can show how thoughts lead to a sense of "I" or "mine." This can also lead to suffering.

There is also a way to reverse the chain. This is called reverse conditionality. Reversing the chain can stop the cycle of rebirth. It can also help a person stop suffering and find peace.
