In Buddhism, rebirth is a very important idea. It is the belief that life continues after death. This happens in an endless cycle called samsara.

Many people think this cycle can be painful. They call this feeling dukkha. To stop the cycle, one must reach nirvana. Nirvana is a state of peace. It happens when a person lets go of craving.

What you do affects your next life. This is called karma. Good or skillful karma leads to good realms. Bad or unskillful karma can lead to harder realms. There are six realms where a being can be reborn. These include realms of gods, humans, and animals.

Different groups have different ideas about rebirth. Some say consciousness moves from one body to another. They compare it to a spark jumping from a hot iron. Others believe there is a middle state called bardo. This state can last for 49 days. Buddhism teaches there is no permanent soul. Instead, rebirth is a way of becoming again.
