The word comes from a Sanskrit root called dhr-. This root means to hold, to support, or to bear. You can think of it as the thing that keeps everything stable. It is like a foundation that prevents chaos from taking over.

How dharma works depends on how it is being used. In a cosmic sense, it is the law that sustains the whole universe. It is the principle that stays constant even when things change. For people, dharma often means their moral duties or responsibilities. A farmer has a different dharma than a soldier. This makes the concept dynamic because it changes based on a person's role. Doing your dharma means following the right way of living.

This idea has a very long history in India. It was used in the ancient Vedic religion from 1500 to 500 BCE. In the Rigveda, the word appears many times to describe things that are firm or established.

Some ancient hymns say that dharma helps hold the sun, stars, and earth in place. Over thousands of years, the meaning grew from simple rituals to complex ideas about ethics. It moved from describing how gods act to how humans should treat each other.

Different religions have their own special ways of using the term. In Hinduism, it is linked to the order that makes life possible. In Buddhism, dharma refers to the teachings of the Buddha and the true nature of reality. Jainism uses the word for teachings about moral transformation and purity. Sikhism sees dharma as the path of righteousness and performing moral duties.

Even the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka used the word in his famous stone edicts during the 3rd century BCE.

Understanding dharma helps us see how people connect to the world. It links a person's daily actions to the larger laws of the universe. Some people call the opposite of dharma "adharma." Adharma refers to things that are considered wrong, immoral, or against nature. By following dharma, followers seek to live in harmony with the world around them. It is a way to find order in a busy and changing life.
