Jainism is an ancient Indian religion known as Jain Dharma.

It teaches a special path toward spiritual purity. Followers aim to reach enlightenment through very disciplined living. This path is guided by twenty-four supreme teachers. These teachers are called Tirthankaras, or "ford-makers." They have conquered the cycle of rebirth to reach omniscience. This means they have perfect knowledge of everything.

To reach this goal, Jains follow three ethical pillars. The first is ahimsa, which means non-violence. This is the highest duty for all Jains. They must not harm any living creature. This includes humans, animals, and even tiny insects. It also means being non-violent in speech and thought.

The second pillar is anekantavada, or many-sided reality. This idea says that truth is very complex. No single viewpoint can claim the whole truth. The third pillar is aparigraha, which is non-possession.

The history of this tradition is very long. Jains believe their religion is eternal. It follows cosmic time cycles. In the current cycle, the first teacher was Rishabhanatha. He is credited with establishing civilized society. The 23rd teacher, Pārśvanātha, lived around the 4th century BCE.

The 24th teacher was Mahavira. He lived at the same time as the Buddha. Mahavira helped establish the current way of life for monks and nuns.

Jainism has about four to five million followers today. Most Jains live in India. Many others live in North America, Europe, and East Asia. There are two major groups called sub-traditions. One is the Digambara, or "sky-clad" group. The other is the Śvētāmbara, or "white-clad" group. They have different rules for monks and nuns.

However, they both share the same core philosophy and values. They celebrate many festivals like Paryushana.

Jains have a unique view of how the universe works. They believe in karma as a physical substance. They see karma as tiny, invisible particles of matter. These particles are like "karmic dirt" that sticks to the soul. This happens because of a person's actions and thoughts.

To clean the soul, Jains follow the "three jewels." These are right vision, right knowledge, and right conduct. By doing this, they hope to reach moksha. This is the complete liberation of the soul from rebirth.
