It means not causing harm to any living thing. Many people believe all living beings have a spark of divine energy. Because of this, hurting another being is like hurting yourself. This idea is linked to karma, or the consequences of our actions. It is a central part of several major traditions.

Some followers believe we must avoid all injury to others. In Buddhism, it is one of the five main precepts. In Hinduism, many texts say nonviolence is the highest moral virtue. This means it is the best practice and the greatest teaching. It is also seen as the highest truth.

This idea has a very long history in India.

Some scholars think its roots go back to the Indus Valley Civilisation. They point to old seals that show people in meditation. In the early Vedic period, people practiced animal sacrifice. Over time, this changed into a focus on ethical virtue. The Chandogya Upanishad lists ahimsa as one of five essential virtues. It also says practicing ahimsa helps people escape the cycle of rebirth.

Many famous people have shared these ideas through history.

The Mauryan Emperor Ashoka used ahimsa as a way to rule. After a war, he chose to lead through dharma instead of conquest. He even made laws to protect animals. In the 5th century, the scholar Valluvar wrote about moral vegetarianism. He taught that not killing was a great virtue. In modern times, Mohandas K. Gandhi was a very famous advocate. He believed humans should cause no injury to any living being.

People sometimes wonder how ahimsa works in difficult situations.

Some thinkers ask if it applies during a war or self-defense. Ancient Hindu texts discuss how to handle these hard jobs. They suggest that force should only be a last resort. If war happens, it must have a just cause. The goal should be to bring peace and restrain wickedness. Even in self-defense, the aim is to stop aggression without making enemies. Some people use these ideas to protect themselves while still showing respect.
