It means nonviolence or not causing harm. This idea applies to all living beings. Many people believe every living thing has a holy spark. Because of this, hurting another is like hurting yourself.

Ahimsa is a key part of Jainism.

It is also central to Buddhism and Hinduism. In Jainism, it is a main virtue. Some followers believe it includes our deeds, words, and thoughts. A famous leader named Gandhi used this idea. He believed in causing no injury to others.

Some thinkers study how ahimsa works in hard times. They ask if it applies during a war. Some old texts say war must be a last resort. If war happens, it should be for a good reason. It should aim for peace and not cause extra misery.
