In Jainism, being a vegetarian is a rule for everyone. Jains follow a path called ahimsa. This means they do not want to cause harm. They try to protect even tiny living things. Because of this, they do not eat roots like potatoes. They believe eating plants that must be pulled up causes harm.

In Hinduism, many people also follow the rule of non-violence. Some Hindus believe that eating meat can lead to bad karma. Karma is a way that actions affect a person. Some Hindu books say that non-violence is the highest duty. In India, many Hindus are lacto-vegetarians. This means they do not eat meat but do eat dairy like milk.

Buddhism has different views on meat. The first rule for Buddhists is not to kill. Some groups, like those in China or Korea, may follow vegetarian diets. Other groups follow rules that allow them to eat meat if they did not see the animal die for them. Many Buddhists still think about how to be kind to all living beings.
