Vegetarianism is when people do not eat meat.

This includes red meat, poultry, and seafood. Some people also skip animal by-products. A person who lives this way is a vegetarian.

People choose this for many reasons. Some want to show respect to animals. This idea is called ahimsa in India. It means non-violence. Others choose it for health or the planet. Some do it for culture or taste.

There are different ways to eat. Lacto-vegetarians eat dairy like milk. Ovo-vegetarians eat eggs. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both. All of these groups eat honey. Vegans are the strictest. They eat no animal products at all. They may even skip wearing leather or silk.
