Free range is a way to farm animals.

It means animals can roam outside for part of the day. They do not stay in a small pen for 24 hours. This lets them see sunlight and move around a lot.

Many people use this for meat, eggs, or milk.

In the past, most animals lived this way. Farmers did not have many vitamins to give them. They needed green feed and sun to keep animals healthy. In the 1920s, scientists found vitamins A and D. This helped farmers keep more animals inside.

Rules for free range change by place. In the United States, poultry must be outside for more than 51% of their life.

The rules do not say if the outside must be grass. In the European Union, hens must have access to outdoor runs. These runs should have plants on them. In the UK, meat chickens must be outside for at least 8 hours each day. This helps them stay strong and healthy.
