Free range is a way of farming animals.

It means animals can roam outdoors for part of the day. They do not stay in a small enclosure for 24 hours. This allows them to move around and see sunlight.

Many people use this for meat, eggs, or dairy. Some people even choose to only eat meat from these sources. This way of eating is called ethical omnivorism. It is a way to connect what we eat to how animals live.

How free range farming works can vary quite a bit. In poultry farming, it often means chickens have access to an outdoor area. This area might be a fenced yard or a large pasture. Some farmers use "chicken tractors," which are portable pens without floors.

Giving birds a good grass range can even help prevent them from pecking each other. For meat chickens, being outside helps them show natural behaviors. This can lead to stronger and healthier legs for animals like turkeys.

In the past, most animals lived in a free range way. Before the twentieth century, people did not understand nutrition very well. It was hard to keep animals inside without a varied diet. They needed green feed and sunshine to get vitamins. Scientists discovered vitamins A and D in the 1920s. This discovery allowed farmers to keep more animals in indoor housing. Large flocks were still raised on pasture well into the 1950s.

Rules for these labels change depending on where you live. In the United States, the USDA says poultry must be outside for more than 51% of their life.

However, the rules do not say the ground must be grass. In the European Union, egg shells have numbers to show how they were raised. A number "1" means the eggs came from free range hens. These hens must have access to runs covered with plants.

Different places also have different ways of helping animals thrive. In the United Kingdom, meat chickens must be outside for at least 8 hours each day.

These chickens often grow more slowly than others. About 40% of pregnant sows in the UK are kept free range outdoors. They might even sleep in huts on their range. This kind of farming helps animals live in ways that feel more natural to them.
