Zooplankton are tiny animals that drift in the water.

Their name means "animal drifter." They live in oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers. These animals cannot swim well against the water. So, they drift along with the currents.

Zooplankton must eat other things to live. This is because they are heterotrophic. That means they cannot make their own food. Instead, they eat tiny plants called phytoplankton.

Most zooplankton are too small to see. But some are large, like jellyfish. We call these large animals macroscopic.

Many zooplankton are very important to the sea. They act as a link in the food web. This means they provide food for larger animals, like fish.

Some zooplankton are very small. These are called microzooplankton. They eat a lot of the tiny plants in the sea.

Other zooplankton are a bit larger. These are called mesozooplankton. Many of these are copepods. They are a very important food for fish. Size is a big deal for these animals. It helps them grow and find food.
