We call these living things neuston. The word comes from a Greek word that means "swimming." They can live on top of the water. They can also live just below the surface.

There are two main groups of neuston. The first group is called phytoneuston. These are plants or tiny plant-like things that float. Examples include duckweed and algae. The second group is called zooneuston. These are animals, like tiny bugs or larger creatures.

Neuston is very important for the world. They are a food source for many animals. Seabirds fly over the ocean to eat them. Other small animals, called zooplankton, swim up from deep water to eat them too. Even red fire ants use this way of life. When it floods, ants link together to make a floating raft. This helps the queen and the babies stay safe on top of the water.
